    Author: THOMAS HELEN

Henry Holland arrived in Canterbury aged 3 with his family. After farming at Greendale, he took over Christchurch traction engine importer W.A. McLaren & Co. He was very involved in Primitive Methodist church, was Christchurch’s mayor for seven years including World War One and an MP during the depression, 1925-35. His son Sidney was later prime minister. Jane Holland (nee Eastwood), a teacher, raised a family, supported Henry’s civic and political life, and as Mayoress became involved in many community organisations including Lady Liverpool Fund and Canterbury Women’s Club. The book uses many sources, including Jane Holland’s very detailed diaries from 1882 to 1942.
