Title: Antipodean Empire: The NZ & Australian Land Company in NZ
    Author: CRAWFORD NOEL

From the late 1860s the Scottish owned New Zealand and Australian Land Company bought very large areas of farm land in the South Island of NZ. The enormous borrowings of its founder, James Morton, led to his bankruptcy and the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank. This was one of the worst bank crashes in Britain in the 19th century.

William Davidson, who succeeded Morton as manager, brought the company back to strength. He initiated NZ's frozen meat and dairy export industries.

'Antipodean Empire' describes each of the company's properties, and there is a brief account of its operations in Australia where, as in NZ, it was the nation's largest farmer in the late 19th century.
